Position Overview
Inova Health System is seeking a Transplant Nephrologist to serve as the Medical Director for the Abdominal Transplant Program.
Transplant Physician - Each kidney transplant program must have on site a qualified transplant physician. A renal transplant physician shall be a physician with an M.D. or D.O. degree or equivalent degree from another country who is licensed to practice medicine in his/her state or political jurisdiction and has been accepted onto the medical staff of the applicant hospital.
Inova Fairfax Abdominal Transplant program has three surgeons and one full time nephrologist; the transplant program desires to hire another full time renal transplant physician.
The transplant physician would work under the direction of the program director and hospital administrator.
Essential Job Functions:
- Primary responsibility will be in the Post kidney/pancreas transplant clinic. However, this role will be responsible for kidney and pancreas patient management in all phases of transplant including: pre, waitlist, inpatient and post. This would include clinical supervision of nursing and other staff in the clinic, active participation in developing treatment protocols, immunosuppression management and follow-up with referring physicians.
- Special emphasis would be on developing clinical protocols that fall under internal medicine, such as hypertension management, diabetes management, osteoporosis management, cardiovascular disease etc.
- The physician will work closely with the transplant surgeons and the pre-transplant coordinators in evaluating and working up patients referred to the transplant program so they may be placed on the cadaver transplant waiting list or undergo living donor transplants.
- The physician will also be responsible for assisting with maintenance of the waitlist by partnering with the waitlist team to perform yearly patient evaluations and corresponding with referring physicians and insurance companies as needed for peer to peer evaluations.
- Assist with evaluation of potential living donors
- Assist with dialysis outreach and program building
- Participate in on-call rotation as required
- Participate and lead Quality improvement initiatives
- Partner in the fiscal responsibility of the program
- Participate in inpatient management
- Lead research studies resulting in publications from the transplant program. Participate in clinical research protocols
- Communicate and coordinate patient admissions with community nephrologists
- Involve community nephrologists in medical management of transplant patients with renal complications or re-admissions after the initial 3 month post-transplant period.
- Attend Renal Sections Meetings
- Ability to perform renal biopsies would be preferred
Requirements
- Board Certification in Internal Medicine and Nephrology
- Completion of a fellowship in Transplant Nephrology
- Unrestricted Virginia License
