The Division of Pediatric Infectious Disease and the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and the Emory University Department of Pediatrics are jointly seeking a faculty candidate to join our vibrant divisions. The faculty member will collaboratively contribute to the expansion of our Immunocompromised Host Service with clinical and administrative responsibilities in both pediatric infectious diseases and pediatric hematology-oncology. This position would provide opportunities for development and growth with a focus on clinical care and clinical research. In addition, the faculty member will contribute to the clinical, research, and teaching missions with coverage of the inpatient and outpatient clinical services and participation in student, resident, and fellow education.

Qualified candidates must have an MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent with ABP board eligibility/ board certification in both pediatric infectious diseases and pediatric hematology-oncology preferred. Salary and professional level of appointment will be commensurate with experience. Projected start date is July 2023.

The Emory Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases is a dynamic group of over 100 clinical and research faculty, advanced practice providers, research staff, and clinical and research postdoctoral fellows whose vision is to translate knowledge into care by reducing the impact of infectious diseases, giving every child the opportunity to thrive.

• Our Pediatric Infectious Disease Division faculty provide inpatient infectious disease consultations at 6 sites across 4 healthcare systems, and in 2 ambulatory care clinics. Members of our faculty care for children and adolescents living with HIV at the Ponce de Leon Youth and Family Center, one of the largest cohorts in the United States.
• Our basic and translational faculty researchers work collaboratively with our clinician-scientist faculty to perform cutting edge research with the goal of finding a cure for HIV, a vaccine for RSV, understanding the current SARS-CoV-2 virus, and preparing for the next pandemic.
• The pediatric arm of the Emory Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit (VTEU) is housed within the Pediatric Infectious Disease Division. The efforts of our VTEU team were instrumental in the national adult and pediatric vaccine trials for COVID-19, participating actively in over 90 studies leading to 200 publications from March 2020-March 2022.
• The research portfolio of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Division has consistently been second in research funding per Division in the Department of Pediatrics over the past 10 years, and first in research dollar when averaged over number of faculty members. Our portfolio also includes participation in the International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials (IMPAACT) Network, the NIH-funded Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network, and NIH-funded career development awards to faculty members.
• Our division faculty collaborate with Emory University as their pediatric partner in the care of children with known or suspected special pathogens, including Ebola. With resources from the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness (ASPR) division of Heath and Human Services (HHS), our team is prepared to care for children who may require specialized care in a biocontainment unit.
• Our 3-year clinical fellowship training program enrolls 2 fellows per year and our division supports the educational efforts of medical students, residents, advanced practice provider students, and pharmacy students.

The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center:

• In 2022, the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center was ranked No. 7 in the nation for Pediatric Cancer by US News and World Report
• The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center has 115 faculty and 35 Advance Practice Providers (APPs), conducting basic, translational, cooperative group and investigator-initiated clinical research related to pediatric oncology and hematology disorders, with expertise in leukemias, lymphomas, brain tumors, neuroblastoma, sarcomas, rare tumors, renal tumors, CAR T-cell therapies, cancer survivorship, health services research, hemoglobinopathies and hemophilia.
• More than 7,000 children with cancer and blood disorders are treated annually at the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center
• The Aflac pediatric oncology program sees ~500 new cancer diagnoses each year. Aflac is the pediatric component of the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University.
• The Aflac pediatric hematology program is one of the largest in the country (including >2,000 active patients with sickle cell disease, and 600 with bleeding or clotting disorders)
• The Aflac blood and marrow transplantation program performs ~80 transplants each year and is one of the leaders in curative therapies for hemoglobinopathies.
• In 2021, Aflac faculty generated $34.5M in extramural funding, including more than $21.9M from the NIH
• The Aflac Developmental Therapeutics Program includes Leukemia and Lymphoma faculty from the high-risk leukemia team and offers a wide portfolio of clinical trials from cooperative groups, industry partners, and investigator-initiated studies, and has a larger referral base in the southeastern United States. Aflac is a member of the COG Pediatric Early Phase Clinical Trials Network (PEP-CTN), NANT, TACL, and PBTC.
